Book Design

The design of the book is the outward face of the story contained within, and gives the reader an immediate impression. A well-designed book will enhance the perceived mood, setting the stage for the story to come to life. It subconsciously prepares the reader for their journey. Elements decided upon include:

• paragraph formatting
• type face and textual elements
• color, images, and artwork*

Layout

The layout of the book carries out the design plan. The manuscript content is inserted in the specified format, and the book is assembled in preparation for printing. Proofreading is essential after final layout is approved. Layout items that may be necessary for the book include:

• table of contents
• frontispiece and/or title page
• publisher page
• index, appendices

• listing in the Library of Congress and copyright protection through the U.S. Copyright Office
• file preparation and coordination of printing processes
• coordination of distribution and sales through distributor channels (including online resellers); referral of direct, non-distribution- channel sales to the Author, if desired
• accounting of sales and royalties through publisher’s distributor channels
